Six amazing housewarming gift ideas

cookbook stand : glass domes : napkin rings : condiment set : home accessories

I suggest housewarming gifts, but you could tag those suggestions for Valentine’s Day or any occasions of the year. In fact, I suspected you may go and buy those for yourself.

Cookbook Stand

Once you used a well-designed cookbook stand, you wonder how you lived so long without one. Besides its look, I am craving for the weighted chains to keep the pages in place. From experience I can tell you that with a thick cookbook, the bar at the bottom are not enough.

The Architectural Cookbook Stand is more suitable for a larger kitchen. If the style harmonizes well with the recipient’s kitchen, I am telling you that you cannot find a better gift for $29.

Glass Domes

Right now, any stylish entertaining scheme involves a few glass domes. We see more and more affordable options. The top right picture shows the 3 models available at Wisteria. They all come with a thin natural stone plate.

A sad story

My husband’s aunt C. is at the hospital after an operation to fight cancer. The operation went well and she is in recovery. Yesterday, the weather was terrible in Montreal. Incredibly strong winds and icy rain fell in the morning.

As I was walking to the office around noon, I asked myself why the sidewalks of sloped streets did not get priority. I took tiny steps like if I was wearing a kimono. I was afraid of falling.

And I was right to be afraid. It happened to her older sister A. fell while on her way to visit C. at the hospital. She fell on an icy sloped sidewalk. She became unconscious and by the time she reached the hospital, nothing can be done. The sad thing is that they told her to take a cab but she preferred walking. We cannot anticipated the worst.

The two sisters were pretty close and I met A. several times in family reunions. I liked her a lot so I will miss her conversation. I hope this will not affect C.'s recovery.

So please be careful as you are doing your daily stuff. Accident happens so easily. Take good care of yourself and your loved ones.

Cute and stylish baby shower ideas

blue and red apron : flip flops : cocktail napkin holder : baby shower gift ideas

Instead of a design mood board, I composed one around potential gift ideas. I will tell you all about why these items have baby shower written all over them.

Aprons

You probably know by now that I adore aprons. And with a new baby, the mother needs more than one for years to come. It is not because you have a baby that you should stop being fashionable. Since you have less time for yourself, it is better to protect your clothes while you are running your daily errands in the house. For example, when you start to give solid food to your baby, the apron protects your clothes up to a certain point.

This Cherry Tart Chef Apron is from an etsy’s seller called BellaBeeDesigns. A hostess version was also available; I just bought it. Every Bella Bee’s apron is handmade with designer fabrics that are 100% pre-washed cotton fabrics. She used designers like Amy Butler and Joel Dewberry. These aprons are created to withstand many years (even generations) of use and washings.

How to Host a Stress Free Gourmet Dinner?

gourmet meal december 2007

Unless you hire a chef at home, hosting a gourmet dinner involves a lot of work. Every year before Christmas, we gather one group of friends for a gourmet meal.

The formula

On last Christmas, we tried something new. Seven couples were participating to the event.

Each couple was responsible for cooking, plating, serving and cleaning up a full course. This includes selecting and buying the accompanying alcohol drink. A random draw determines which course was assigned to us.

The menu started with a welcome cocktail and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a cold first course, a warm first course, the entrée, the "trou normand" (granite with a dash of alcohol) before the cheese platter and concluded with the dessert. As you can see, the plates were well-presented. Everything tasted delicious.

No one knew in advance the menu except that it should feel like Christmas. We informed the host of our planned menu who was in charge of coordinating the event program.

Living in style with a cat

modern cat condo_midcentury modern cat bed

Caring for a pet is fun. But often their toys destroy our home decor. At least, more and more brands come to our rescue by offering modern design cat and dog accessories.

Typically the solutions were expensive. Thank to MoCo LoCo, I discovered two affordable solutions for design conscious dwellers.

The TALL Modern Cat Condo by Two Tree International Co. provides a space where your cats can play and rest, perch and pounce. Since there are two spots, my cats would not fight for a space of their own.

In case your cat is a hard core scratcher, it is good to know that you can replace the foam scratching pads. The pads are available in chocolate or beige.

A blog on Modern designs for living with cats

If you are looking for more solutions, read the Moderncat blog. With no connection to the maker of the Modern Cat Condo, this blog is a resource for cat owners with a modern style edited by a dedicated cat owner with a design background.

Bring natural harmony to your home

ligting by Nicolette Brunklaus :: tableware at the conran shop

One of the enduring trends is the chic natural look. This style mixes modern design with icon of the wildlife.

The Shady Tree Lights designed by Nicolette Brunklaus from Amsterdam certainly portrays this style. Offer in six colors and three formats, you will find you to fit your space. You can achieve an overall rustic look by mixing the Log Hanging lamps with the Log Standing set. Folded Secret neatly catches your post and hides your keys.

February 6th, 2008 Update: I saw the Nicolette Brunklaus Lights at Lekker when I visited the store last week-end. The ceiling lamps are even more adorable in reality.

In the foyer, let your guests hang their coats on another Dutch design. Perfect for the urban crowd, the Rack Deer Park displays 3 über hip solid cast aluminum deer antlers.

Colorful Picnic Tableware for Moms Get Together

colorful melamine by Rice :: Reisenthel babybag and picnic tool

By listening to my friends who are new mothers, I noticed how much fun they appreciate a picnic in the park with young children. So I compiled a list of stylish colorful accessories.

A punch of colors stimulates babies. Reading Syrliga karameller on Purple Area this morning led me to a whimsical Danish brand called Rice.

What is new at Rice?

The Spring / Summer 2008 catalogue of Rice is full of sweet candy colors. You will discover a vast collection of melamine bowls, plates, lunch boxes, glasses, trays and utensils. Several formats and colors caught my attention.

The ice cream cupcake bowls with their orange spoon are so cute. Use them to serve fruit salads, puddings and baby food at the park. I am a fan of the Bento lunch box. The food stays well separated and you can prepare the servings in advance.

Alphabet Photography Art

word art by alphabet photography

I received an email from Jennifer of Alphabet Photography to inform me of a new art product. I look at it because it intrigued me. What I discovered is a unique concept.

Starting from black and white photographs taken around the Niagara Region during the summer of 2007, you can custom your own word art. Their Web site has a pretty simple to use Create a word interface. You can adjust each photograph individually and see the result automatically. I did it for the name of my husband and my name.

Each photograph is a 4 x 6, so the art work does not take too much space. Depending on the number of letters, you can find an integrated photo frame or align several frames in a row. Look at Umbra; they are my favorite brand for cool and stylish photo frames.

An excellent gift idea

For the upcoming Valentine’s Day, Alphabet Photography proposes a personalized gift solution. Make sure to make a good lasting impression and select a series of upscale photo frames that match the decor.

Odorless hands on Valentine’s Day

stainless steel odor less soap bar and garlic crusher

I have to admit that I am not a fan of dining out on Valentine’s Day. The restaurants are too busy. I prefer a romantic, more intimate dinner at home sitting on the cushions near the fire place.

Since typically a home cooked meal requires minced garlic or onions, what do you do with the smell on your hands? Stainless steel bar soap is the solution.

Rub-A-Way Bar

I have to admit that I was skeptical. But I tried the Rub-A-Way Bar at my brother’s house last Christmas. It really works! Do not be afraid to make your own sushi or cook fish that night; just rub your hands on a stainless steel bar.

I have been told that Canadian shoppers can find from time to time the Rub-A-Way Bar at Winner or Home Sense (I am not sure which) for about $5.

How does it work?

These gadgets use oxido-reduction, a natural property of steel, to effectively remove strong odors. You can get rid of onion, garlic, fish, even nicotine scent in minutes.

Dancing under the stars at Igloofest 2008

igloofest 2008 : kim vallee with jerome paradis and katheline jean-pierre

If you live in a Northern country, you know that winter does not stop us from having fun outside. Why not tame the cold with a huge chilly dancing party?

For two week-ends in a row, Piknic Electronik organized a Wild Winter Piknic Fun at the Quays of the Old Port of Montreal. A large crowd danced to the beats of DJs from Canada, United States, United Kingdom and Germany.

Ice sculptures, igloos, tree silhouettes and multimedia effects bring vibes to a beautiful location. Suitable clothing, fire pits, dancing and bar stations with mulled wine, caribou and fortified coffee keep us warm.

A Bad Taste Contest

When you will watch the video, you will see bright one piece ski suits and weird clothes. Do not worry; Montreal is still a fashionable city. It is just that Igloofest run a contest.

We were all invited to wear our tackiest, wackiest clothes. Let say that some used sport equipment stores in the city were able to sell their ugliest ski suits. But you have to admit that in a chill party like this, the costumed participants look pretty cool.

Egg candle holders by Michelle Mason

egg candleholders by michelle mason

Made from English fine bone china, these egg shape candle holders are lovely and modern. They are sold in pair, one medium and one large egg, nicely packaged in a recycled board gift box.

UK artist Michelle Mason designed her latest creations so you can watch the wax drip like egg yolk. It is a fact that the British people like to eat soft-boiled eggs on the morning.

I like the romantic idea but not the wax stain on my tablecloth. If you are like me, you got two choices:

  • Buy no dripping candles but you lose the concept
  • Rest the pair of egg candle holders on a tray or a wood board

I prefer the second option.

Decorating your home at Easter or for a brunch

Better yet, a single tulip or a branch fits into the hole. So get a few pairs. Mix and match candles, empty eggs and plants to create a dramatic effect in your home.

Your avatars as wedding cake toppers

customavatar_caketoppers

I am not a huge fan of wedding cake toppers but these ones got my attention. As a leisure gamer, I found those cake toppers pretty amazing.

Targeting the fans of Nintendo Wii this Valentine, Paul Pape Designs got an overwhelming demand. Their production does not start there. Paul Pape Designs also produces clay imitations of your game avatar characters.

For a wedding, the mid and deluxe options are worthwhile. For $200, the deluxe version delivers a custom job including the reproduction of your wedding dress and the groom's tuxedo. You can decide on your own pose and even, add a scenery.

Not just for getting hitched!

If it is your birthday, have them create a clay imitative sculpture for your event.

Paul Pape Designs is also renowned for its true-to-scale, laser die-cut paper furniture called Pop-Out Furniture.

More Innovative Serving Ware by Sagaform

sagaform_entertaining

If you like to hosting parties, you know that amazing serving ware look impressive. In fact, for the time challenged entertainers, the best method for quickly set an impressive table is to equip themselves with remarkable serving dishes, plates and utensils.

Swedish brand Sagaform appeals to the stylish modern entertainers. Their design products have definite style, function well and are affordable. I look at their latest collection. Here are the products that caught my attention. Unfortunately you would not able to get them for the 2008 Super Bowl party, since these are new products.

What is coming soon?

The three in one service utensil is sure to turn heads. Its three-arm star form supports a spreading knife, a service fork and a serving spoon. Very practical, you can buy a set of 4 to 8. This way, you always have the right utensil ready to use. This design is a space saver. I feel that once you tried those threes in ones, they will become essential for your picnics and barbecue events.

Fulfilling your Travel Essentials at Flight 001 | Shopping Alert

flight 001 fill and fill travel bottles

With all the traveling I am doing right now, I came to appreciate more than the cool factor of gadgets available at Flight 001.

If you have a friend who travels a lot, these three products would be deeply appreciated as a hostess gift. They are more great products to choose from for their birthday.

As I told you earlier when I gave you my hospitality tips, my hair wants me to use the brand of shampoo and conditioner they are accustomed to. I did not bring my own because of the 10 kg constraints for carryon luggage. To do that, you need carry-on approved bottles.

Fill + Fly Bottle

This set contains 4 reusable, refillable, leak-proof, shatter-resistant vacuum bottles packaged in a zip-top bag. I read on the latest Domino magazine that you can get 20% off the regular price on the Fill + Fly set by typing Domino at your checkout.

Mood board for the 2008 Super Bowl party

super bowl tablescape idea

With less than 2 weeks before the big game, it is time to finalize your design. You know me; I am going for a stylish look. So I compiled a mood board to get you started.

My best advice is to stay away from the easy and expected props to celebrate the Super Bowl. The trick is to find an inspiration and to harmonize the rest.

Vintage meets modern

My design kicked in with these cute vintage football plates. A glass set completes the series inspired by classic 1940s artwork. A new addition to the Williams-Sonoma catalogue, each set shows a quarterback, a cheerleader, a punter and a running back.

Some of your guests may be die-hard fans. A kicker can be to serve walnuts as a snack during the game. The dark wooden bowl is a two in one serving ware piece: the bowl integrates the nutcracker. I suggest you get an extra nutcracker so no one fight for one.

You can serve nuts in a carafe like I have seen at Westin Casuarina in Las Vegas. Very hygienic, the shape pours easily the nuts in your hand without touching the nuts.

Cool tea light holders from Sagaform

glass globe and hold tealight holders by sagaform

Candle lights are crucial to any table top. Cleverly spreading many holders over the table makes a statement. The possibilities are infinite.

One brand that I like a lot for entertaining is Sagaform of Sweden with their unique modern design.

For a modern look, the colorful GLASS GLOBE tea light holders by Sagaform will not go unnoticed. Available in two sizes (5 inches and 7 inches), I particularly like the two color effect. GLASS GLOBE glass tea light holders exist in a hanging holder version and a candlestick.

Sagaform innovates again with HOLD Designer Tealight Lantern, a donut shape tea light holder. What makes the HOLD unique is its integrated serving tray that doubles as a tea light storage. The removable top can be used the bottom as a serving tray for tapas. This model works best on a coffee table when you sip a cocktail.

Stock a few for you and buy more to bring as a hostess gift.

Hospitality tips I learned from traveling

Bathroom at The Fairmont Mayakoba at Riviera Maya : My Hotel Geek

An old saying teaches us that Travel broadens the mind. I would add that traveling makes you a better host.

We are so accustomed to how we live at home that we do not notice the small details anymore. But staying at hotels uncovers the fine points that make your stay comfortable or not. Hotel design and functionality have improved greatly over the years. But they are still room for improvements on the comfortable level as I experienced it.

Why this is relevant to entertaining at home? Simply because it can make you better host when you are having guests staying over at your home.

My wish list

More and more hotels got it while other hotel chains are still clueless. I compiled my list of essentials for make your stay over guests absolutely divine.

Makeup station outside the bathroom

If you are sharing the room, you must apply your makeup in the room on the morning while your roommate is taking a shower. You want to save time after all. But low lighting is the norm inside the room, especially near the mirror. This is my biggest complaint about hotel design. I still do not understand because no hotels got it.

Margarita on The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian

the grand canal shoppes at the venetian

The Internet connection is on and off at the Westin Casuarina, so I will condense what I want to share with you about my trip to Las Vegas.

Yesterday, we rode on the monorail to see to eat at Quarks and live the Star Trek Experience. My husband is a geek, what can I say. On our way back, we stop at The Venetian to see this out of this world Venice man made universe.

We had dinner at a Mexican restaurant with authentic Mexican cooking, as much as you can get in America. It was a good choice. The food is delicious at Taqueria Canonita.

Taqueria Canonita is located next to the canal of The Grand Canal Shoppes. On my picture, you see their terrace in the background next to the gondola. We were seated at the most entertaining spot in the house. Watch the video as I am telling you all about my margarita.

How to select a dinnerware set?

blue sophie conran for portmeiron dinnerwarw

A reader, Tracy asked me a question about the Celadon dinnerware collection by Sophie Conran for Portmeiron. Can that lovely light blue clash or compete with the food?

My answer is yes and no. That is why I suggest you get some pieces in white and other in blue (celadon). Mixing two solid colors is quite fashionable and sophisticated as I explained in Swedish design tableware with Höganäs Keramik.

My own experience

For my job, I am trying dinnerware all the time. I usually buy 2 place settings and I use them daily for a while. I bought my Sophie Conran's place setting all white plus some additional Celadon salad plates.

I used them mostly for dessert and under the soup/cereal bowl. As you can see from this picture, bowls look great with noodles inside. The color is wonderful for a breakfast meal. For serving soups, the blue highlights a carrot and ginger soup, a minestrone soup or a cauliflower cream. As I am writing this, I realized that I bought plates but I should have bought bowls also.

Valentine cards | Etsy watch

Turtle Papers : Earmark Invitations : Fabulous Finds : Pepperina Press

The love in your life deserves something unique. So start with a crafted card from artists on Etsy. I compiled 4 cute Valentine stationery that fit the bill.

First, Love Birds Valentine’s Day Note Cards is a set of 6 note cards designed by Jennifer of Turtle Papers. Lovely! Comes with 6 chartreuse envelops and costs $9. Charming zoo animals, origami cranes and delicious cupcakes are typical topics.

Love is in the Air brought up memories of a popular disco song. I am singing it as I am writing this post. The picture refers to many years before. The orange caught my eye and I like the vintage feeling. Designed by Australian-born Helen of Pepperina Press, Live is in the Air displays eye-catching shades of strawberry silhouette and orange lettering.

Next American Stop: Las Vegas

lasvegas

Our next week-end getaway begins in two days. We are heading to Las Vegas this time. The temperature this morning was only 8 degrees Celsius more in Las Vegas than in Montreal. I am already missing last week's sunny California.

We hope to see the Cirque du Soleil shows that are only performing in Vegas. O for sure and maybe Zumanity. The tickets I found so far for O are with limited views. So if you know trustworthy sites where to buy the tickets, tell me.

We will look at the tour for the Grand Canyon. But there are so many to choose from. I saw this helicopter tour with a 30-45 minutes picnic with champagne on the ground. It called Grand Canyon Helicopter Basin Landing Special on LookTours.com. Does anyone have ever tried it or heard comments?

We will visit quickly the hotels that are almost amusement parks. My husband and I, we stay away from buffets. Do you know on great places where to eat?

Revisiting the Sandwich Box

sandwich box

Sandwiches are the ideal food for many occasions. To raise the bar, why not serving them in a more fashionable way?

One definite way to grab your guests’ attention is to reproduce at home how they serve your sandwich at Sandwich Box in Toronto.

Ever since my last trip to Toronto, I am dreaming of Sandwich Box. I could not eat there at that time because I just ate lunch minutes before. So I had to skip.

An upscale sandwich

The concept behind Sandwich Box is to serve gourmet sandwiches at a fast food price. But before I spot the freshness and the excellent quality of their ingredients, what strikes the designer in me was the way the sandwiches are served?

Again you see that attention to details goes a long way. A white, logo free rectangular carton box hosts your sandwich and apparently, a small mesclun salad. The more elegant clear plastic cutlery and an extra-thick paper napkin complete your place setting.

Caveman Theme for a 40th Birthday Party | Real-Life Party

caveman theme for an adult birthday party

Denise, a reader, can teach us a lesson or two about party themes. She likes parties and it shows. Her design looks amazing. She is obviously talented but her strength is to let her imagination flows and she is not afraid to put the efforts.

Many of her parties include rentals, new accessories mixed with things that she already owned. But not this one.

Denise developed the Caveman theme for the 40th birthday of one of her friends. For her own words, this over the hill birthday party was easy to prepare. And with her tips, you will know what to look for if your wish to experience the prehistoric charms for a night.

This tabletop for 12 guests costs less than $100, in fact $7-8 per person. Denise found everything locally and at really good prices. Let’s review how she did it.

The decorative elements

The dinosaurs belong to her kids. The stone chargers come from the home improvement centre. Denise roughly cut the edges. Then she decorated the economical stepping stones with a brown craft paint and dirt to simulate old stones.

Faux-Pas at the Communal Restaurant Table

my husband at the father's office

While we were at Father’s Office, the guy next to us put his half-full plate inside the plate of my husband because he did not like having his plate in front of him.

He did not ask if my husband has finished his plate, he just assumed. Frankly, he acted like a thoughtless guy who just thinks about his small person. Let's make it clear. In no circumstances whatsoever can that behavior be acceptable. Even with your close friend or a relative, it is not tasteful to act that way.

What did I do?

I was astonished by his behavior; I never seen that before. I did not want to start an argument but I want to send him the message that it bothered me. So I pushed back the two plates on his side a few times until his girlfriend took the plates away from us. She put the plates against the barman’s bar this time. They did not even talk to us to say they were sorry and it was their mistake.

Not your Father's Office

father's office on Montana Ave in Santa Monica

For our last night in LA, we wanted to eat some comfort food. So we went on a hunt for the best burger in town. And a local pub from the list of 101 reasons why to live in Los Angeles grabbed my attention.

Father’s Office is not your typical place. It is a neighborhood meeting place like we find in Europe. Founded 50 years ago, it is very popular with the locals today.

In fact, I heard the doorman saying to a man ordering some take-outs outside that a second pub twice the size of the original is scheduled to open soon. The fact that a man has to order his take out outside is a definite proof that they observed a strict policy on capacity. Since he did not want to wait in line, a waiter met him outside to take his order. With a maximum capacity of 76 persons, we waited in line 10 or 15 minutes on a Monday night at 8 o’clock.

The local customs

We heard while waiting in line some comments than suggested the place works differently. So we asked our friendly doorman for tips on how it works. He told us that the first thing to do once we get in is to find a free table. It usually means spotting the ones that are almost finished. The first person who arrived at a table gets it. There were many people on the hunt but my husband luckily found us a space for 2 at the five minutes later. He is the best!

Window shopping on Rodeo Drive

salvadore ferragamo store on Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills

Take a look at the store windows on Rodeo Drive. We are not allowed to film inside.

I really like the orange handbags at Dolce Gabbana. A lot of girls go wild for shoes. Me it is bags. Chanel collection is divine. And the beautiful dresses at Max Mara fit my body type.

I enjoy Prada fashion. I saw some pretty dresses. Their ballet flats were adorable; I cannot wear heels for the next year or so.

The design of the Prada store mixes simplicity hidden behind nifty technological tricks. Glass walls made of panels switching from clear to frost in a harmonic fashion, plus a camera that follows your movements in the change rooms are some of the cool gadgets I saw at the Beverly Hills Prada store. On my video, you can catch a glimpse of the interior and see the mannequins under the sidewalk.

Watch the video to have an idea of my afternoon.

Drink ideas for a Valentine's Day celebration

sagaform mulled winepot and cocktail set

Nowadays, it is frequent for singles to host a party with single friends. When you make a party, you simplify the bartending task by having a signature drink for the event.

To go with its time, Sagaform proposes a cocktail set with a lemon reamer and a muddler. You can make the popular mojitos. But you may prefer a drink associated with winter.

There is no better way to warm up the atmosphere than to serve a mulled wine or cider. Glöggset, a Mulled Wine Pot is designed to keep the wine at the right temperature. This is a practical solution to quickly serve refills at a party.

This one displays a traditional Nordic pattern. The heart symbol is prominent. It is one of this time where it is ok to be literal in your decor.

A homemade solution

Glöggset is made of stoneware. For its superior thermal quality, a cash iron works perfectly. After examining the Sagaform mulled wine set, the only thing I miss to assemble my own with my latest Le Creuset Fondue Set is the cover.

We were told by a friend of a celebrity that Toast Bakery Café on 3rd was a great place to eat breakfast. So yesterday we gave it a try. And I am glad we did.

The food was excellent. It is a trendy popular place. If you go, unless you are lucky like us and found a parking spot right in front across the street, go for the valet parking. It is only 5 dollars.

In less than 15 minutes, we sit at our table. This gave my husband time to take some outside shots. As he was taking a picture, a car stopped with three cute girls. They asked him: Who’s there? As he was talking to them, I called him. They thought he was a paparazzi! It is true that we do not see a lot of amateur Nikon cameras around here, especially with someone wearing a hat.

The food

I ordered a twist on the Egg Benedict called The Open Face. Strangely, their real Egg Benedict is served on an English muffin instead of a croissant. To make an Open Face, you layer smoked salmon, scallions and scrambled eggs topped with hollandaise sauce an opened face croissant. Pass it in the oven just enough for the hollandaise sauce to stop being liquid. It was delicious. If you are planning a brunch, that recipe should be a hit.

Modern architecture houses along Venice Beach

venice beach modern houses

Ever since I started blogging two years ago, I saw wonderful modern architecture houses. Many were located in Venice. So I did not want to miss them on my trip to Los Angeles.

We went to the Venice Beach this afternoon. Eureka! I saw several along the beach.

Eating out at Gonpachi in Beverly Hills

kim vallee with masa yamamoto and jerome paradis

Last night we went for sushi. I first spot a sushi restaurant designed by Philip Starck team but we were unable to get a reservation for 8 o’clock.

So the hotel concierge suggested Gonpachi on North La Cienega Boulevard. Watch the video to get a glimpse of the wonderful time we had at Gonpachi. I take about the food when we came back.

My arrival at Los Angeles

That is the right way to greet a guest. Giving them a warm cookie at their arrival. I just finished eating the chocolate cookie that we were greeted with at DoubleTree. It was good!

Our flight went well, we rented a sporty car, life is good as you will see in my first video report on my vacation in Los Angeles.

Ideas for Baking with Kids

tips on baking with kids

The best way to teach children good eating habits is by teaching how to cook at a young age. And since kids like to imitate grownups, they are typically excited by this activity.

Cooking tools for kids

This idea is born while browsing through the catalogue of Sagaform for another post. If you wan tot develop the habit to cook with your kids, it is best to get gears designed for them.

From Sagaform, teach your kids good taste by giving them a cute hand painted Pastry Board with Rolling Pin made of birch. Sagaform To make cakes, get the Baking set completed with a Spatula, a whisk and cake tins.

A mother herself, Sophie Conran proposed a Mummy's & Mine cooking set.  Part of the Sophie Conran for Portmeirion collection, it has everything young boys and girls need to start baking. This gift set contains a child's hat and apron, two star cookie cutters, a porcelain mini-jug, a mini pouring bowl, plus a box paper cups.

Ceramic Memo Pad

ceramic memo pad at see jane work

Often while you are at the phone, you need to write something just for a while. And you throw the paper after. Why not use something that can save a tree?

That is the premise behind this Ceramic Memo Pad. You simply write your message with a basic dry-erase marker. Once done, wipe the board clean and you have a clean slate.

I know that it would not help you with your grocery shopping. But you can use this Ceramic Memo Pad as a tiny communication board for members of a household.

I like the fact that it has a non intrusive design so people visiting will not notice it. Better yet, your space stay clean since you would not get papers pilling up because you forgot to throw them away.

The Ceramic Memo Pad makes a neat housewarming gift. Show up at the door with a couple of pads nicely wrapped. Unfortunately you have to wait before making your friends jealous because See Jane Work is currently out of stock.

The story behind the making of my Status Competition

status competition : facebook application by Jerome Paradis and Kim Vallee The second self-promotional post of the day. Do not worry, it will not become an habit!

Besides being an entertaining expert, some of you may know that I am a geek. And I proud to announce that the first public Facebook application developed by my husband Jerome Paradis and I has been approved. Our Facebook application is called Status Competition.

Status Competition is an application that enables you to stay connected with your friends. We invited some friends to play before the official launch. The responses have been quite positive. We already had some reviews by bloggers.

We even have friends who challenged themselves and entered into a sprint of Status Competition voting. I was astounded by the scores they achieved. Be warned, playing Status Competition can become addictive. I would be sad if you miss my daily posts.

A little bit of retro kitsch entertaining with Brini Maxwell show

Brini Maxwell press photo and vidcast

Stylish living and entertaining is fun but why not take some time to entertain ourselves at the style? I went on a hunt for a witty video cast.

I got my answer with Brini Maxwell downloadable video series featuring footage from the original New York cable access show. It is a comedy. Brini's weekly New York-based television show broadcasts recipes, tips, and information. You can see the episodes revisited on the Web.

To give you an idea of the show, explore a little vintage through the reveal of Brini’s apartment renovation. It is a satire about the DIY home improvement shows. Watch first 03-17 The Big Finish - Part One to be transported in the 1940’s. 03-18 The Big Finish - Part Two is all about vintage furniture and accessories. Take a break and enjoy!

My moment of self-promotion

BP guide :: blogger and podcaster

I advertise on the USA Today Blogger & Podcaster Guide to raise awareness about my blog. People can rate my blog. If you like what I do, I invite you to give me lots of stars.

My word of advice to fellow bloggers

If you are interested to advertise your blog in The Blogger & Podcaster Guide, know that their debut has been rough: their system crashed and they stopped the launch for several weeks. It is fair to say that technically, they underestimated the impacts of an aggressive marketing campaign targeting communities of bloggers and podcasters all at once. I feel that they still need improvements on the usability. But since I used to work as a UI designer, I am generally demanding about the interface ease of use.

I took advantage of a two-month free promotion at the very last minutes a while ago. I do not waste any money but I wonder if I will cancel my subscriptions. Since I do not think the free offer is still available, you may want to wait before subscribing your own blog. I still have to see any impacts on my traffic. That is why I am asking you to rate my blog. Maybe it would help.

Eleven place card holders for your dinner parties

modern style place card holders at my wedding favors

A quick way to push further your table decorations is by using decorative place card holders. This personal touch makes your table stands out.

Although those are sold for weddings, they work as well for your dinner parties. From my experience, if you are looking for something that is not widely available at typical retailers, search at wedding favor stores.

I received some samples from My Wedding Favors to appraise what they look like. I went for the traditional ones because I want to check the detailed works on the pieces since they are quite affordable. After review, I am satisfied with the look, especially considering that they do not cost a lot.

My Wedding Favors has a huge catalogue. Take the time to explore to find the right design for your event. To speed things up, I selected 11 place card holders for you; all fitting into my entertaining style.

Beautiful accessories for winter entertaining at Cox and Cox

winter entertaining ideas at Cox and Cox Mailorder

The product selection at UK Cox and Cox Mailorder emphasizes a nostalgic and retro feel. The two founders, Fiona Cox and Lizzie Thornton-Allan take inspiration from childhood memories with a contemporary twist. Their concept works since I experience a warm feeling every time I visit their Web site.

With a background in catalogue design and styling, these women understand the appeal of well presented products.

My product selections for dinner parties

The pouring bowl and the roasting dish by Sophie Conran for Portmeiron are shown at the top. Even if I introduced this tableware collection before, the pictures were too beautiful to pass.

The Heart shaped Olive Oil Dipping Dish is cute. I received a similar set of 4 individual size dipping dishes from my mother in law last year. I find the levels are practical. You can remove the extra oil before eating your bite piece.
